A) THE P R A C T I C E OF G R A I N - R E F I N E M E N T IN ALUMINUM ALLOYS A1) R e a s o n s for G r a i n - R e f i n e m e n t It is well known that addition to a m o l t e n m e t a l of an agent which will p r o m o t e g r a i n - r e f i n e m e n t on c a s t i n g without i n t r o d u c i n g o t h e r n o t i c e a b l e a l l o y i n g effects will r e s u l t in i m p r o v e d m e c h a n i c a l p r o p e r t i e s and s u r face finish in the alloys cast. F u r t h e r , the u s e of s u i t able g r a i n - r e f i n i n g a g e n t s can p e r m i t a r a d i c a l i n c r e a s e in c a s t i n g s p e e d s . In the a l u m i n u m i n d u s t r y , this has led to the bulk of g r a i n - r e f i n i n g a g e n t s b e i n g used in the p r o d u c t i o n of ingots, e x t r u s i o n b i l l e t s and sheet for f a b r i c a t i o n , u s i n g e i t h e r s e m i c o n t i n u o u s or continuous m e t h o d s of c a s t i n g .
