In the last several decades, scholars from multiple disciplines have turned their attention to understanding the implications of early childhood health for adult health and susceptibility to disease. Whether drawn from biology, medicine, or the social sciences, a growing body of empirical evidence suggests that maternal health before conception, prenatal and perinatal exposures, and conditions in childhood play critical roles in health over the life course.
