T h e h i g h p u r i t y 7075 h a d a 0.02 c o m b i n e d wt p c t of F e + Si, w h i l e t h e s p e c i f i c a t i o n s l i m i t s f o r c o m m e r c i a l 7075 p u r i t y l e v e l i s s e t a t a c o m b i n e d wt p c t o f l e s s t h a n 1 . 2 . T h e o b j e c t i v e of t h i s i n v e s t i g a t i o n w a s t o c o n s i d e r i n m o r e d e t a i l the s e n s i t i v i t y of t h e n o t c h e d f a t i g u e s t r e n g t h t o t h e p u r i t y of b o t h 7075 a l u m i n u m c o m p o s i t i o n s (7X75) h e a t t r e a t e d t o t h e p e a k s t r e n g t h c o n d i t i o n (T651). S i n c e t h e p e a k h a r d e n e d t e m p e r of 7075 i s s u s c e p t i b l e t o s t r e s s c o r r o s i o n , 3'4 the f a t i g u e t e s t s were c o n d u c t e d in a n i n e r t e n v i r o n m e n t t o i s o l a t e the e f f e c t of p u r i t y . T h e T 6 5 1 h e a t t r e a t m e n t p r e c i p i t a t e s 71' p a r t i c l e s w h i c h a r e s h e a r a b l e by disl o c a t i o n s , s a n d p r o m o t e s i n h o m o g e n e o u s slip b a n d formation d u r i n g deformation.~ P l a n a r s l a n t f r a c t u r e m o d e s h a v e b e e n r e p o r t e d by s e v e r a l i n v e s t i g a t o r s 7-9 i n b o t h 2000 a n d 7000 s e r i e s a l u m i n u m a l l o y s . T h i s f r a c t u r e m o r p h o l o g y a n d the f a i l u r e m o d e a r e a p p a r e n t l y r e l a t e d to i n h o m o g e n e o u s slip b a n d f o r m a t i o n .
