Ischaemic gastritis: case report A 91-year-old man developed acute ischaemic gastritis (IG) following treatment with ferrous sulfate for anaemia [dosage, duration of treatment to reaction onset and outcome not stated]. The man had anaemia, and he had been receiving oral ferrous sulphate. Subsequently, he presented with haematemesis. The laboratory investigations revealed haemoglobin 7.2 g/dL, mean corpuscular volume 83.2 fL, urea 48 mg/dL and prothrombin rate 68%. Gastroscopy showed the ischaemic appearance of the stomach body with limited mucous and haematologic debris. Biopsy revealed brown-black colouration of the adjacent mucosa along with the presence of fibrin erosions. An epithelium with fibrinleukocyte scar tissue and brown-yellowish material was seen in the lamina propria as well as in the foveolar and glandular cytoplasm. The perls method showed a positive result for the pigment. These findings confirmed the diagnosis of acute IG secondary to the intake of oral iron. Quinones Castro R, et al.
