Memory disturbance (first report with fluvastatin): case report An approximately 60-year-old man with hypertension and high cholesterol levels developed memory disturbances during treatment with rosuvastatin and later during treatment with fluvastatin. The man started receiving rosuvastatin 10mg [dosage not clearly stated] and developed significant memory impairment 3 months later; he experienced embarrassing situations because he started forgetting his colleagues’ names. At this time, a good lipid level had been achieved. The man discontinued rosuvastatin early the following month of his own accord. After about 2 months, his memory impairment had resolved. Approximately 3 months later, the man spontaneously resumed rosuvastatin therapy, aiming for an ideal treatment outcome. His memory function was distinctly impaired 9 days later. He first reduced his rosuvastatin dosage to 10mg every other day and later discontinued the therapy. A drug-induced reaction was considered possible and rosuvastatin was replaced with a depot formula of fluvastatin, which was administered as a single 80mg dose. After 3 months of therapy, he again noted distinct memory impairment. Fluvastatin was replaced with ezetimibe and his memory disturbance did not recur during 6 months of ezetimibe therapy. Melin J. » Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase and Medline did not reveal any previous case reports of memory disturbance associated with fluvastatin. The WHO Adverse Drug Reactions database contained 18 reports of amnesia associated with fluvastatin.
