There are many people who have kept me company on this journey—so many guides and helpers sent to show me, teach me, or force me to make a greater commitment to my life and my writing. This book has been written in the hope that readers will open their minds and hearts and really feel what it means to live such a complex childhood in foster care, and to know that every young life deserves to have a childhood free from fear, worry, and anxiety. Children need to feel loved, safe, and secure so they are able to do what children do naturally—share joy, love, and laughter. Thank you to the Children’s Social Care Department who participated in this research and the one amazing change-maker who made it all possible. Through sharing their lives, the young people in this book have changed my life, and perhaps they will change yours. They are brave, trusting, and honest and children like them must never be written off. Thank you Lucy, Ocean, Stealth, Amma, Jasmine, and Tallulah. To my parents who were my first guides in love and tenacity and who raised me to be fearless—I love you. Thank you. Caroline and Hazel— thank you for your acceptance and love.
