combines the rigorousness of the physicist with the practicality of the engineer. His 50-year career has been divided between government and university, and he frequently served as a consultant to industry. He occupied many positions of high responsibility throughout his career: Director of Research and Development for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey; Director of the Mining Research Laboratory of the Colorado School of Mines, which he founded; Assistant Director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory; Head of the Mechanics Branch at the Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake; and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado. The previous recipients of the JSR Award are as follows: 1990: M. Wilkins (LLNL, United States) and A. Deribas (Institute of Hydrodynamics, Russia); 1995: R. Pru¨mmer (Germany) and A. Sawaoka (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan); 2000: D. Shockey and D. Curran (SRI International, United States). The 2007 recipients of the JSR award were L.E. Murr (University of Texas, El Paso) and Y.L. Bai (Institute of Mechanics, China). L.E. Murr Citation: For seminal contributions to shock compression, high strain, high strain rate deformation, and for global leadership in the field. Y.L. Bai Citation: For seminal contributions to the theories of shear-band formation and damage in materials and for leadership in dynamic behavior of materials in China. We thank all the participants, reviewers, and persons who made this event successful. The funding was used to support the travel expenses of foreign invited speakers and starving students. A special acknowledgement goes to the United States Army Research Office, and especially to Dr. Bruce La Mattina, for the financial support of this symposium. Respectfully submitted to Metallurgical and Materials Transactions, Symposium Chair: M.A. Meyers Symposium Co-chairs: E. Cerreta G.T. Gray III N.N. Thadhani K.S. Vecchio
