On May 15, 2007, Directive 2007/2/EC by European Parliament and the Council entered into force on establishment of European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI). The assumption is that ESDI is to be the sum of National Spatial Data Infrastructures. One of the first stages of building the ESDI is the establishment by Member States of metadata for spatial data series, collections and services, in specified and legally sanctioned terms. Metadata, defined as “data on data”, shall serve a number of purposes in the ESDI, amongst others being the publication of information on spatial data resources made available under SDI by many institutions, including governmental ones.
