Abstract The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic literature review (SLR) of geotourism and territorial development. Current and future trends in the field are identified. The paper offers an SLR on the geotourism and territorial development and advances through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis comprising the period 2007–2018. The articles gathered in the search on the Scopus database until 2018 were submitted to a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer software. In the papers analysed, a relation was identified between geotourism and territorial development by benefits generated through this type of tourism at social and economic level. The bibliometric analysis also enabled us to identify clusters among the most cited authors that revealed some dominant themes and the relationship between the clusters. By studying the articles’ citation profile, this study’s findings contribute to a better understanding of the flow of production interrelated geotourism with territorial development and research-related practices in this area of research. Keywords Geotourism . Development . Territorial approach . Systematic literature review
Introduction Geotourism is a term that appeared, firstly, in the 1990s defined by Hose (1995) as a tourism niche product “geological based” and secondly, on 2002, by the National Geographic Society as a tourism and territorial approach “geographical based.” Geotourism can be, currently, defined according to Dowling and Newsome (2018), as a form of tourism which focuses on an area’s geology and landscape, as the basis of

fostering sustainable tourism development in order to generate benefits for conservation, communities, and the economy. Geotourism, in addition to promoting local entrepreneurship (Farsani et al. Around the world, geotourism is one of the activities developed by UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGGps). Clearly defined as a geographical area with geological heritage of internati
