INTEGRATED SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM
Volume 2
Aims and Scope A hub for a large number of national and international scientific and academic networks, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme/FMSH (http://www.msh-paris.fr/) helps forge relations between institutions, researchers, and research teams worldwide in order to facilitate research across disciplines. No one discipline is given priority and there are no territorial limitations. The FMSH is committed to its role as a place for experimenting with and fine-tuning ideas, new theories, and types of organization. Founded upon the conviction that interdisciplinarity is essential for understanding the complex questions facing society in a global setting in order to make sense of diverse cultures, the FMSH’s mission is to act as “a facilitating, interdisciplinary, and international incubator.”
Integrated Science & Technology Program (ISTP) Book Series Today, the FMSH continues to occupy a unique place in research and to provide a uniquely stimulating environment for intellectual meetings and exchanges. The creation of the Integrated Science & Technology Programs (ISTP) facilitates this interdisciplinary exchange and pursues three main goals: – to highlight the success of integrated approaches in science – to examine national and international policy with regard to research in science and technology – to address the cultural, economic, political and social impact of scientific and technological development
The ISTP Book Series includes volumes of selected invited papers and is intended for researchers, practitioners, undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines who are dealing with complex problems and looking for cutting-edge research as well as methodological tools to set up truly transversal science and technology projects. Themes The work generated by exchanges and cooperation between researchers from all countries has helped to delineate research themes that often touch upon the major questions facing contemporary societies. For the Foundation, this means taking a risk on “unconventional” projects that correspond to its mission of “incubator.” Through its broad-reaching programs, which address a wide array of cultures and civilizations while maintaining a clear focus on historical depth, international comparisons, and interdisciplinarity, the FMSH assists interdisciplinary projects that seek to improve our understanding of key problems linked to the reshaping of contemporary societies. Examples of themes include: – – – – – – –
