Series Foreword Although the UNESCO charter claims that “war begins in the minds of men” the discipline of psychology, which places human cognition center-stage, is often not explicitly acknowledged in academic programs on conflict and peace, nor among practitioners in international relations. The Peace Psychology Book Series recognizes that the successful pursuit of human security and well being in the 21st century requires transdisciplinary approaches that include psychologically-based theories and practices. During the past 20 years, peace psychology has emerged as a specialty in psychology with its own knowledge base, perspectives, concepts, advocates, and preferred methodologies. Peace psychologists seek to understand and promote cognitions, emotions, and actions that prevent and reduce violent episodes and mitigate the insidious form of violence called structural violence, which kills people slowly through the deprivation of human need satisfaction.
