Foreword

The satellite gravimetry mission GRACE marks the beginning of a new level of engagement of geodesy in climate research. Since its launch in 2002, GRACE is delivering uninterrupted series of rather detailed maps of temporal variations of the Earth’s gravity field. They reflect changes in the continental water cycle, quantify mass losses and gains of glaciers and the ice shields of Greenland and Antarctica, and allow to discriminate the steric from the mass component of global sea level rise and determine postglacial land uplift.
