Preface

Although progress in sustainable urban transport can emerge from a variety of areas of activity, from the private sector, from research in social science or in technology, the book presented here focuses on the contribution of the public sector and public sector decision-makers, those people that plan and manage our urban transport, at a time when there are real, day to day difficulties and immense challenges in attaining sustainable modes of transport in our cities and metropolitan areas, particularly in the Americas. This is why our first expression of appreciation goes to the many public servants who accepted to talk to us about their work, in Seattle, Montreal, and Curitiba (Brazil), when we visited them in 2011, 2013, and in 2018.
