To my parents Hildburg and Erhard Türke

Foreword by Prof. Dr. Markus Schwaninger

Ralf-Eckhard Türke’s book is the impressive result of high-quality basic research, and constitutes a very important contribution to the governance of social systems. It is written with verve and empathy. Türke presents a holistic, integrative framework for governance based on an interactional perspective. Due to his extraordinary creativity and enormous commitment, he has succeeded in building a theory that is not only consistent but also potentially very powerful. The main emphasis of the book falls on organizational diagnosis and design, and the author presents a coherent system of propositions that is highly innovative. In principle, the foundation for a drastic improvement of the standard of organizational interventions is offered. That is revolutionary! The theory presented here is no mere mental construction from the “ivory tower”. On the contrary, it capitalizes on the author’s substantial experience in the application field, while also benefiting from an empirical test documented in the opus. This volume is full of valuable insights, and furnishes the conceptual basis for superior governance. Practitioners will gain a great deal from it. I wish Türke’s book the broad dissemination that it deserves. St. Gallen, March 2008
