Preface and Acknowledgements
This book is a product of over a decade of studying Hannah Arendt’s political thought. In a sense, it is my doctoral dissertation revised. I would like to hope, however, that in the seven years that passed since I finished my dissertation my understanding of this complex political thinker has somewhat improved, in large part due to the many excellent studies on Arendt which have come out in recent years, in what seems to be an ever-growing scholarly literature on Arendt. Perhaps surprisingly for a thinker about whom so much has been written, I feel there is much that remains to be explored in Arendt. More specifically, I suggest in this study what amounts to a reinterpretation of some major themes in Arendt’s political thought, as I examine her writings through a lens few have taken seriously before as an essential part of her political thought: her commitment to participatory democracy in the form of a citizen council system. I have attempted to demonstrate the fruitfulness of this approach in various articles I have published on different topics in Arendt, all in one form or another connected to her suppor
