Preface
This book had its genesis in the spring of 1981 in Parma, Italy, where workers in the field of hemofiltration had assembled for an international symposium and for the organizational meeting of the International Society of Hemofiltration. The common wisdom held that the time was ripe for a comprehensive and archival volume on the subject. Dr. Stanley Shaldon convened the present authors and suggested that they work as a team to provide the proper balance of investigative, c1inical, and scientific interests, as weil as an appropriate degree of geographical dispersion. The editors would like to thank the participating authors for the effort and scholarship underlying their contributions. It proved especially satisfying to assemble so many of the pioneers and champions of hemofiltration into one volume. Dr. Peter Kramer, one of the most prolific and innovative workers in this field, had agreed to prepare a chapter on continuous arteriovenous hemofiltration; his untimely death unfortunately precluded his participation. For most contributing authors, as weil as for the editors, hemofiltration represents not just a principal invest
