Hereditary peripheral neuropathies are the most common inherited diseases of the nervous system. The high prevalence of 1 patient per 2500 inhabitants underscores the importance of these diseases in everyday clinical practice. Until the 1990s, the diagnosis of hereditary peripheral neuropathies was based on clinical findings alone. Very little was known about the various entities, their diagnostic differentiation, their natural course or biological background. This is why a firm diagnosis could often not be made.
