High doses of diphenhydramine may be fatal The US FDA is warning that consuming higher than recommended doses of the antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl and generic products) may result in serious adverse reactions including heart disorders, breathing disorders, seizures, coma and death. The FDA is investigating news reports of adolescents being taken to emergency departments or dying after participating in a "Benadryl Challenge," and videos being posted on TikTok. It will provide a further update to the public after reviewing this issue. The FDA advises consumers to store diphenhydramine away from the sight and reach of children, and preferably lock it up, to prevent accidental overdosing in children and misuse in adolescents, and advises healthcare professionals to encourage adolescents and caregivers to read and follow the advice in the Drug Facts label.
