Abstract Although the coalbed methane’s (CBM) production is influenced by many factors, the reservoir permeability is the main parameter of coalbed methane seepage analysis. However, the experiment of CBM is still based on the experiment of conventional reservoir. In the experiment of conventional reservoir, the core will be cemented, cut, and polished, the high pressure will be used, and the nitrogen will be used as the displacement fluid. This means that the experiment is adapted to the weak stress sensitivity, high permeability, and no adsorption effect situation. But the coal has strong stress sensitivity, low permeability, and adsorption effect. This paper analyzed the common methods of CBM permeability experiment, pointed out the current problems existing in the CBM permeability experiment with the analysis of the coal character, and established a new permeability experiment equipment and method considered for the features of coal, which can reduce the experimental error caused by the limitation of experimental samples and device and improve the accuracy of the experiment. Introduction In recent years, with the adjustment of energy structure and the sustained rapid economic development, natural gas and other clean energy demand is rapidly growing, while the conventional natural gas resource is decreasing; the contradiction between supply and demand caused by the increasing gap between supply and demand has become a very serious problem, which means shale gas, tight gas, and coalbed gas will be used as a supplemental source that can greatly ease the tense situation in the supply of natural gas (McKee et al. 1988). During the development of oil or gas, it is very important to evaluate the permeability of the reservoir, because permeability is an important parameter to correctly understand reservoir characteristics and determine the production well productivity and the development plan.

For conventional reservoirs, permeability can be obtained by laboratory core test easily. But because of the coalbed’s nanopores, coal reservoir permeability is very sensitive to the external environment, and there are lots of research about coal permeability’s influence factor (Pan et al. 2010; Liu and Rutqvist 2009; Puri et al. 1991; Aziz 2013; Mitra et al. 2012; Savaşçin & Özkan, nd). There are many methods to determine the permeability of coal reservoir, but the most commonly used method is the core experiment. However, the permeability experiment for coal is still based on conventional reservoir permeability testing experiment. Considering the experimental procedure, in the prepara
