In memoriam Sad Loss of Associate Professors of Surgery Vassileios Pararas and Vangeloyiannis Kateryiannakis

2017 witnessed the death of two Associate Professors of Surgery of the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Vassileios Pararas and Vangeloyiannis Kateryiannakis. The 1st Propedeutic University Surgical Clinic of the Athens General Hospital “Ippokrateio”, where for so many years they both provided their invaluable services, and the whole academic and medical community, have not only bade farewell to two outstanding scientists, dedicated to the relief and healing of their patients, but have also lost two fine men of exceptional character. Vassileios Pararas was born in 1936 in Lamia, where he completed his basic education at the Lamia First Boys’ High School, before entering the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In 1971 he completed his specialty in surgery from the The 1st Propedeutic Surgical Clinic of Athens University, and in 1977 he was awarded his doctoral degree. He then went to England for further education at the Vascular and Cardiac Surgery Department of the Hammersmith Hospital in London, 1978-1980. On his return to Greece he continued in his specialty of vascular surgery, along with general surgery at the 1st Propedeutic University Surgical Clinic of the Athens General Hospital “Ippokrateio”, where he acquired varied experience in teaching and authorship and was appointed to successive university positions; in 1984 permanent Lecturer in the Section of Surgery in the School of Medicine, in 1988 Assistant Professor, and in 1990 honorary Reader in Surgery. In 1995 he was elected Associate Professor. He was a dedicated worker and an invaluable colleague in the1st Propedeutic University Surgical Clinic until his retirement in 2003. Vassileios Pararas was a fine surgeon and a fine man, with impeccable demeanor towards his colleagues, the nursing staff and the patients. He was polite and sociable, and as a teacher he demonstrated great patience and a talent for communication, inspiring respect in those around him. He was a firm family man, married to a doctor, and he leaves two sons to honor their parents’ name.

Vangeloyiannis Kateryiannakis was born in 1947 Ierapetra, Crete, where he spent his early childhood. In 1965 he completed his high school education at the Herakleio First Boys’ High School, with the grade of “excellent”. That year he entered the School of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, graduating in 1971 with a general ranking of “excellent”. After his two years of military service he was assigned, for his rural service, to the Halkida General Hospital, following which, in February 1975, he was appointed to the 1st Propedeutic University Surgical Clinic of the Athens General Hospital “Ippokrateio” for specialty training.
