PREFACE
Climate negotiations and policy have been shaped by many individuals representing various interest groups over the past 30 years. Whether these interest groups are nation states, businesses, peoples or charities their approach to engagement and constructive or obfuscatory dialogue shapes the outcome. Many argue that the vested interests of these different groups are fundamentally incompatible while others hold out for inspirational political leadership that can both compromise and drive ambition. However, some of the represented interests go much deeper than others and occasionally one set of individuals can hold a plethora of competing interests that are not always mutually reinforcing. One such group are those individuals who represent one of the largest nation states in the world—India. India’s interests are complex and ever changing. Indeed, its interests are more than just ‘interests’—they represent a set of identities that shape India itself. Identities are more difficult to compromise on or negotiate away and are therefore vital to understand whether you are an academic, negotiator or citizen.
