FOREWORD: MEDIA INDUSTRY STUDIES IN PRACTICE
Media industry studies certainly has come a long way. Roughly a decade ago, when we began drafting the introduction to our edited collection, Media Industries: History, Theory, and Method, Jennifer Holt and I observed that there remained ‘a dearth of formal gatherings and conferences for those researching the media industries, as well as an absence of journals or anthologies devoted specifically to the study of media industries as a coherent discipline’ (2009: 1). Oh, how things have changed. As of this writing in early 2016, the Society of Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS) has a Media Industries Scholarly Interest Group as does the International Communication Association (ICA).1 There is a now an open-access, peer-reviewed journal, Media Industries, and several universities, including University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) (with its Media Industries Project) and the University of Nottingham (with its Institute
