Preface
Clinicians and researchers have become increasingly involved in the neuropsychological assessment of infants and young children. This is related in part to the increasing numbers of infants who now survive insults to the central nervous system and proceed to develop sequelae such as major disabilities (severe mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and sensory impairments) as well as highprevalence/low-severity dysfunctions (learning, attention, and behavior problems). Writing this book has provided me with the opportunity to better define and bring together the type of work that I have done over the last 20 years, an area that I call infant and early childhood neuropsychology. The discipline is emerging and currently lacks clear definition. Basically, it involves assessment of brain--behavior relationships in the context of developmental change and maturation. Although there are several good texts on child neuropsychology, this is not the case with infant and early childhood neuropsychology. This reflects in part the fact that the latter is a hybrid and
