Preface

I have studied Barnard’s management thought for more than 30 years since I was a graduate school student at Kyoto University. Fortunately, I was under the supervision of Haruki Iino, a leading researcher on Barnard’s organization and management theory. I published a book, Soshiki to Ken-i (Organization and Authority), as a doctoral thesis on the basis of Barnard’s theory; the book depicted an organization as a relationship of dyadic human relations and proposed a new model of organizational authority from the viewpoint of a triadic relationship among a superior, a subordinate, and their peers. There is a huge accumulation of research on Barnard in Japan. One reason for this is that Iino played a major role in introducing and developing Barnard’s theory in Japan. Iino collaborated with William B. Wolf, an expert on Barnard, and organized a research group, the Chester I. Barnard Society of Japan.
