Definition Islam, Governance, and Political Culture in Bangladesh: To examine the relations between Islam, governance, and political culture in Bangladesh, this entry portraits the contextual framework of governance and political history of Bangladesh and how it has correlations with Islam. This is done by observing the nature, relations, and processes of the historical development of Islam and politics in Bangladesh with the
characteristics of Islam and democratic political culture in Bangladesh; in doing so, this entry, finally, aims to examine the convergence and contradiction of Islam in the political sphere of Bangladesh and how Islam, governance, and politics are inextricably interconnected and knotted in the political history of Bangladesh.
Introduction Islam, a religion of peace, has deep roots in the nature, functions, and performance of the governance and political culture in Bangladesh. Islam, by nature, absorbed and reflects the general norms of the peoples of Bangladesh, which predominantly covers the social, political groups’ activities, and “state’s behaviors” (Nyadera and Islam 2020a) directly or indirectly. In the domain of politics, Islam, as a religion, significantly influenced the governance and political culture of Bangladesh which arguably is considered as “secular” in state level (though in the constitution, Islam is the state religion in Bangladesh) but religious (Believer) in “personal/individual” level mostly. Islam, through its huge stimulus, has always been linked with a multi-colored inextricably sociopolitical impact on Bangladesh, in its cultural, social, economic, political, and democratic transition and crisis. From grassroots politics to state politics, from top to bottom policymaking level, indistinguishably, Islam was able to make a new image and has a vast

contribution to the historical evolution of Bangladesh. Additionally, Islam, in its culturally comprehended roots, has a great influence on the mystical spiritual legacy and history of the political culture of Bangladesh in a constructive and viable process.
