Materials Issues in Art and Archaeology Scheduled for Cancun
Strategies to prevent looting, trade, and destruction of antiquities and sites; Making things: process reconstruction as essential to conservation; Characterization, evaluation, and monitoring of conservation treatments; Site characterization and environmental monitoring; and Resource surveying. Two extensive evening poster sessions plus visits to the archaeological site of Tulum and Chichen-Itza are planned. Proceedings of the meeting will be published by the Materials Research Society. The fourth in a series of meetings on Materials Issues in Art and Archaeology will be held May 16-20, 1994 at the Westin Regina Resort, Cancun, Mexico. Scientists, conservators, historians, anthropologists, and other interested individuals will have an opportunity for multidisciplinary dialogue focused on both ancient and modern materials. The five-day meeting will consist of sessions on the following topics: New methods and applications of materials science in art and archaeology; Visual appearance and imitation of one material with another; Stable, ancient protective coatings; Materials stability; Accelerated aging, NDE, and noninvasive treatment; Strength of materials and their longevity; Identification of workshops and crafts; Conservatism and innovation in craft traditions; Strategies for the future;
Under a program inaugurated in 1993, IUMRS scholars will be selected to deliver lectures in developing countries. The Union will offer travel support of up to US$1,200, with the host institutions providing living expenses. Lecturers will be selected by a review committee. Nominations for candidates for the 1994 IUMRS Lectureship are being accepted until August 1, 1994. Those interested in applying should submit a personal vitae, three letters of recommendation, and a pledge indicating the host institution's support to: R.P.H.
