James Tait Goodrich: a collector of friends

# Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2020

More than a worldwide known, gifted and admired neurosurgeon, James Tait Goodrich touched the hearts and minds of everyone, everywhere he went. James Goodrich was an empathetic, altruistic, highly sensitive person and also a gentleman. With his innate generosity, he was always available to handle a countless cases of high complexity all around the world. During 2018 and 2019, he enthusiastically oriented the surgical separation of craniopagus twins in Ribeirão Preto and Brasília, Brazil, where his expertise was crucial for the success of the procedures. He had been present at every surgical step of each procedure without any other profit than the pleasure of collaborating with friends to help their patients. Jim Goodrich was a brilliant teacher. His talks were always eagerly awaited and the conference rooms were always crowded. His lectures always had a touch of humor and irreverence that reinforced his take-home message.

Jim had a special interest for the History of Medicine, rare books, and ancient manuscripts. He also collected PreColumbian artifacts and old medical instruments but, more than this, he collected friends. One of his friends said, very properly, that he loved everyone and everyone loved him. Jim departed unexpectedly, leaving his friends astonished and aimless. His friends will miss him. They will miss the handshakes and hugs, currently banished from our affective manifestations. They will miss the nightly conversations with aromatic cigars and the slow sipping of assorted spirits he used to bring with him wherever he went. He will always be remembered by their pairs. Jim had very strong ties with the ISPN and with both the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery and the Brazilian Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery. With his passing, a painful sense of loss and a deep sorrow came over everyone who knew him. Rest in Peace, Jim! José Francisco M. Salomão
