Cardiac arrest and hypotension in paediatric patients: 3 case reports From a study, two paediatric patients, aged 5 months and 12 years, respectively, were identified after they developed hypotension while receiving ketamine, and a 17-month old infant was identified after they developed cardiac arrest while receiving ketamine. All of the patients [sexes not stated] underwent surgical treatment for pericardial effusion and received ketamine for induction of anaesthesia [dosages and routes not stated]. Two of the patients developed hypotension post-induction, while the remaining patient developed bradycardia following by pulseless electrical activity post-induction [durations of treatments to reaction onsets not stated]. Two patients received dobutamine and epinephrine [adrenaline], respectively, for hypotension. One of these patients improved with pericardiocentesis [outcome of other patient not stated]. The remaining patient received epinephrine and CPR, and underwent insertion of a pericardial drain for cardiac arrest. Five minutes later, spontaneous circulation was restored without neurological sequelae. All three patients were extubated and admitted to an ICU. Author comment: "We experienced one cardiac arrest and two cases of hypotension requiring treatment with inotropes following induction with ketamine, suggesting the drug is not a panacea in all cases."
