I H E i m p o r t a n c e of c a r b o n and m a n g a n e s e , and t h e i r r e s p e c t i v e o x i d e s , in s t e e l m a k i n g o p e r a t i o n s has led to a n u m b e r of i n v e s t i g a t i o n s on r e a c t i o n s between t h e s e c o m p o n e n t s . A few k i n e t i c s t u d i e s have b e e n m a d e and a l a r g e q u a n t i t y of i n f o r m a t i o n is a v a i l a b l e in the l i t e r a t u r e c o n c e r n i n g the t h e r m o d y n a m i c s and p h y s i c a l p r o p e r t i e s of s l a g s c o n t a i n i n g m a n g a n e s e oxide and dilute liquid i r o n a l l o y s c o n t a i n i n g m a n g a n e s e a n d c a r b o n . I n view of the l i m i t e d k i n e t i c data, p a r t i c u l a r l y with r e s p e c t to r e a c t i o n m e c h a n i s m , on the r e d u c t i o n of m a n g a n e s e oxide f r o m a s t e e l m a k i n g slag by c a r b o n d i s solved in liquid i r o n , the p r e s e n t i n v e s t i g a t i o n w a s c a r r i e d out. The p u r p o s e of this study w a s to d e t e r m i n e the r a t e of r e d u c t i o n of m a n g a n e s e oxide f r o m a slag by c a r b o n d i s s o l v e d in i r o n , and to a t t e m p t to d e t e r m i n e the r a t e - l i m i t i n g m e c h a n i s m . A k i n e t i c study of m a n g a n e s e t r a n s f e r b e t w e e n m o l t e n i r o n and b a s i c s l a g s was c a r r i e d out by Sano, Shiomi, and M a t s u s h i t a . 1 T h e s e i n v e s t i g a t o r s p r e p a r e d c a l c i u m oxide and t i t a n i u m oxide c r u c i b l e s to c o n t a i n the twop h a s e s y s t e m . Only a few e x p e r i m e n t s w e r e c a r r i e d out and the r e s u l t s had to be t r e a t e d q u a l i t a t i v e l y . A study on the r e d u c t i o n of m a n g a n e s e oxide by s i l i con d i s s o l v e d in liquid i r o n was m a d e by Dairies and P e h l k e f l A c o m p r e h e n s i v e study was made u s i n g z i r c o n i a c r u c i b l e s to hold the s y s t e m d u r i n g r e a c t i o n . This was a fast r e a c t i o n and diffusion of m a n g a n e s e in the m e t a l was d e t e r m i n e d to be the r a t e - c o n t r o l l i n g step. T a r b y and P h i l b r o o k a studied the r e d u c t i o n of i r o n oxide and m a n g a n e s e oxide by c a r b o n - s a t u r a t e d liquid i r o n . T h i s study was p e r f o r m e d in an induction f u r n a c e and no a t t e m p t was made to v a r y the s t i r r i n g r a t e of the s y s t e m . They identified the r a t e - c o n t r o l l i n g step as t r a n s p o r t of the i r o n o r m a n g a n e s e in the slag phase. Yagi and Ono 4 a l s o have studied the r e d u c t i o n of MnO f r o m CaO-SiO~-A12Oa slag by c a r b o n s a t u r a t e d i r o n . They too p o s t u l a t e a diffusion c o n t r o l l e d m e c h a n i s m l i m i t e d by m a n g a n e s e t r a n s p o r t in the s l a g . WELDON L.
