Preface
The present book includes extended and revised versions of a set of selected papers from the First International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management (IC3K 2009), held in Funchal - Madeira, Portugal, during October 6–8, 2009. IC3K was organized by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information Control and Communication (INSTICC) in cooperation with ACM SIGMIS. The purpose of IC3K is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners in the areas of knowledge discovery, knowledge engineering and knowledge management, fostering scientific and technical advances in these areas. IC3K is composed of three concurrent and co-located conferences, each specialized in at least one of the aforementioned main knowledge areas, namely: – KDIR (International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval).
