Exacerbation of seizures: 5 case reports One man and four women experienced seizure exacerbation after switching from another antiepileptic to levetiracetam or after levetiracetam was added to their antiepileptic regimen [dosages and routes not stated; times to reaction onset not stated for all patients]. A 34-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman experienced a recurrence of generalised tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) after levetiracetam was added to lamotrigine; the woman was also receiving topiramate. A 23-year-old woman developed focal motor seizures after levetiracetam was added to lamotrigine monotherapy. A 30-year-old woman, who had been seizure-free for > 10 years on valproate,* experienced a recurrence of GTCS within 2 weeks of switching to levetiracetam due to valproate-related adverse effects. An 18-year-old girl with newly diagnosed epilepsy experienced a recurrence of GTCS after levetiracetam was substituted for carbamazepine due to adverse effects. All five patients showed prompt improvement or cessation of seizure activity after levetiracetam was discontinued. * specific salt not stated Aranyi Z, et al.
