Abstract Professor Aloke Dey, more respectfully, Aloke-da (da ≡ elder brother) has been our friend, philosopher, guide, research collaborator and a wonderful companion. This article provides a tribute to Aloke-da by looking into his life and work. We provide a glimpse of the profound impact that Aloke-da had for Statistics as a profession, his students, and his colleagues. Keywords  Design of experiments · Survey sampling · Combinatorial theory · Linear algebra

1 Aloke‑Da’s Formative Years Born on September 12, 1945, Aloke-da spent his initial years of education in Kanpur and received his M.Sc. degree in Mathematics at a young age of 19. Thereafter, in 1966, he completed his second M.Sc. degree in Agricultural Statistics from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Institute of Agricultural Research Statistics [now Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute (IASRI)], New Delhi. This was followed by a Ph.D. from the same institute, in 1969. During his Ph.D., he made lifelong friends with other fellow prominent statisticians including G. M. Saha, A. K. Nigam and A. C. Kulshreshtha. These friendships that started with talking about nitty-gritties of Ph.D. turned into great friendships throughout Aloke-da’s life, and have also resulted in research collaborations. After a brief stint at the UP Agricultural University (later rechristened as Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology), Aloke-da joined IASRI in 1970 as a tenure-track faculty member. Given his zeal, perseverance, and excellence in research, teaching and administrative practices, he rose to the rank of a senior professor in 1977—at a young age of thirty two years. His research interests, as we know, focused primarily on experimental design and survey sampling. Given the connections between agricultural research and design of experiments, IASRI * Ashish Das [email protected] 1

provided a great platform for Aloke-da to make monumental contributions to the area while also remaining connected to the practical problems. The prominent team of research faculty then included A. K. Nigam, A. K. Srivastava and V. K. Gupta.

2 Aloke‑Da: The Illustrious Career A world leader in the area of design of experiments, Aloke-da had also researched in other diverse areas ranging from survey sampling, combinatorial theory and linear algebra. Spread over half a century, his fundamental research, reflecting an amazing versatility and depth, immensely enriched the theory and applications of statistics. 2.1 Design of Experiments Aloke-da made path-breaking contributions to diverse areas that include factorial designs, varietal block and row-column designs, weighing designs, response surface designs, crossover designs, designs for making test versus control treatment co
