Preface

The science and practice of photodermatology has been largely based on knowledge derived from white skin. Therapeutic modalities based on lasers and light sources are often based on protocols that have been utilized in Caucasian populations. The biologic effects of light in pigmented skin are not as well understood. Consequently, we are just beginning to elucidate mechanisms and develop treatment strategies that are more specifically tailored to darker skin types. The writing of this book has been a challenge primarily because there is not yet sufficient information in the literature to arrive at concrete recommendations as far as treating pigmented skin with lasers and light sources. The information presented here represents what is currently known, as well as what needs to be further investigated. Although this book aims to discuss therapy, it is important to not overlook some basic foundations in photobiology, such as principles of optics, biology of photodamage and photoaging, protection afforded by endogenous pigmentation, and the issues surrounding the use of photoprotective agents in nonwhite skin. These topics are discussed in the first part of the book. Practical information on the use of specific treatment modalities and the approach to specific dermatologic condi
