Like many first books, this one has been a long time coming. Its construction has spanned so many years that parts of it have been written in seven different states, at four different universities, and alongside a menagerie of different pets. As such, there have been many people who have contributed to the shape that this book has taken, perhaps too many to remember, and I owe each of them a debt of gratitude. First and foremost, I would like to thank Jane Gallop. Jane was the person who first introduced me to queer temporality back in 2005 when I told her about my interest in the intersection of sexuality and time at one of our first meetings about my dissertation. Little did I know then the huge impact that she would have on my work and on my sense of myself as a writer and scholar.
