Los Alamos Director Hecker is Plenary Speaker at 1994 MRS Fall Meeting
Siegfried S. Hecker, director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, will deliver the plenary address at the 1994 MRS Fall Meeting. The plenary session is scheduled for Monday, November 28,1994 at 6:00 p.m. at the Boston Marriott, Copley Place, Salon E. Hecker attended Case Western Reserve University, where he received BS, MS, and PhD degrees in metallurgy, then spent two years as a postdoctoral appointee at Los Alamos. He began his professional career in 1970 as a senior research
metallurgist with General Motors Research Laboratories. He joined Los Alamos in 1973 as a technical staff member, Physical Metallurgy Group, then served as chairman, Center for Materials Science, and division leader, Materials Science and Technology Division, before becoming director. Hecker is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the American Society for Metals, an Honorary Member of the American Ceramic Society, and the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1990 James O. Douglas Gold Medal Award, the 1989 Kent Van Horn Distinguished Alumnus Award from Case Western Reserve, and a Science Digest 1985 Top 100 Innovations Award. He belongs to the Coalition to Increase Minority Degrees and serves on the Board of Regents, University of New Mexico; the Governor's Technical Excellence Committee, State of New Mexico; the boards of directors of Rio Grande Technology Foundation and New Mexico Technet, Inc.; and the Board of Advisors, Santa Fe Institute. His memberships in honorary organizations include Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity, Alpha Sigma Mu Honorary Metallurgical Fraternity, and the Society of Sigma Yi. IMIRISI
