This book owes its existence to my penchant for rummaging in archives. One day, hunting about among documents at the Institute of Cultural Inquiry in Los Angeles, I discovered a tattered copy of the Ladies’ Home Journal from 1910. Leafing through it, I came across an illustration of Louise Brigham’s dining room, accompanying one of her several articles for the LHJ on the subject of furniture made from recycled boxes. This image fairly leaped off the page at me, the starkness of Brigham’s rectilinear box furniture startling in its contrast with the plush and cozy home furnishings illustrated throughout the rest of the issue. Intrigued, I started to tug on this thread that chance had dropped in my lap: who was this Louise Brigham, and why hadn’t I heard of her?
