Low Velocity Ratio Transverse Jets Influenced by Concentric Synthetic Jets

The objective was to discover and evaluate methods of smokestack downwash reduction using unsteady forcing. The flow is essentially a low momentum jet in a crossflow. After preliminary investigations of several concepts, the final wind-tunnel model applie

PREFACE

The Centre International des Seiences Mecaniques (CISM) in Udine, Italy brought together in June, 200/ a group of experts with specialized interests in the modeling, experimental interrogation, manipulation, and control ofjets, with special focus on the jet in crossjlow or transverse jet. The resuZt was a week-long Advanced School on the Manipulation and Control ofTransverse Jets. There was an extensive series of lectures by Jive academic specialists on subjects relevant to jets and their control (Professors Luca Cortelezzi, Ari Glezer, Ann Karagozian, Petros Koumoutsakos, and M. Godfrey Mungal). as weil as a series ofworkshop presentations by a wide variety of academic as weil as industry speakers from around the globe. The outstanding lectures and discussions which took place in this Advanced School are captured in the series of papers contained within the present text. The text is organized into a series of chapters providing the state-of-the-art in terms of: 1) a fundamental background on and characteristics of transverse jet and related jet systems, 2) a fundamental background on modeling and dynamical systems control, with special focus on jet jlows, 3) descriptions of multiphase and/or reactive jet in crossjlow studies, and 4) descriptions of the actively controlled jets in crossjlow and related jet systems. It is anticipated that this text will be
