Foreword

I feel lucky, as well as honoured, for this homage organized by my good friend, the learned and tireless Michael Matthews, who rounded up so many friends both old and new, and invited them to write something from the bridge that joins science to philosophy. If you wonder how I succeeded in reaching a century, my answer is: through luck, hard but exhilarating work, tenacity, optimism, and comparatively clean living. Far from ignoring the many political and ideological horrors of my time, I take pride in having been an engagé intellectual, but I have not allowed those horrors to smother me. I kept thinking of scientific, philosophical and social problems even under duress and while escaping my creditors. This symbiosis did not take courage: it is the way my brain works. I have kept my curiosity by reading scientific journals and consulting and arguing with experts in many fields, and by learning from some authorities while questioning others. For instance, I started out by admiring Marxism-Leninism, but ended up criticising its ontology and politics. Likewise, at the beginning of my research work in quantum microphysics I accepted the dogmas of the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics,
