Foreword

“Model building is the art of selecting those aspects of a process that are relevant to the question being asked.” J.H. Holland1

Mathematical modeling has been applied to Engineering for centuries. Undoubtedly it was behind many of the wonders of the industrial age. More recently, we have witnessed the blossoming of many areas where mathematical modeling has an ever increasing impact. Among such areas, we can mention biomedical research, semiconductor technologies, industrial management, chemical engineering, and power systems, to cite just a few. This volume provides a cross section of a wide range of applications where mathematical modeling techniques can be exemplified in a fairly self-contained form so as to allow a non-expert
