PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 864, p17 - 17 Oct 2020 Medical crowdfunding for HCV-related costs in patients and caregivers Donations on GoFundMe crowdfunding pages set up to support hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related costs in patients and caregivers are greater when a socially desirable source of infection is disclosed, according to findings of a pilot study published in PharmacoEconomics - Open. This cross-sectional study reviewed the data in all posts containing the term hepatitis C in publicly available GoFundMe crowdfunding pages in June 2019, to assess whether the source of HCV infection was disclosed, how the patient reported contracting HCV, and all costs (direct costs, indirect costs, healthcare costs and non-healthcare costs) reported in the request for funding. Only 30% of the 685 GoFundMe pages related to HCV disclosed the source of infection; 86% of these reported a socially desirable source such as blood transfusion, organ transplant or occupational exposure, while 14% reported contracting the disease through socially undesirable exposure such as injecting drugs, sexual contact, or needle sharing.
