Mercaptopurine Photosensitivity: 2 case reports The Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre Lareb received reports of two men who developed photosensitivity during treatment with mercaptopurine. A man between the age of 21–30 years reported severe itching after receiving mercaptopurine [dosage and route not stated] for approximately 4 months for Crohn’s disease. His symptoms developed after exposure to a solarium and he recovered 2 days after exposure to the UV light. He had a similar reaction previously when he was exposed to a solarium during mercaptopurine treatment. Another man between the age of 61–70 years reported a facial eczematous rash after receiving mercaptopurine [dosage, route and therapeutic indication not stated] for approximately 5 months. He had been exposed to sunlight for several hours and his face was the only part of his body which had been exposed to sunlight. Treatment with mercaptopurine was continued and he was recovering approximately 2 weeks after the symptoms began. Author comment: "The current observation describes the possible association between mercaptopurine and photosensitivity reactions." Lareb. Mercaptopurine and photosensitivity.
