Mifepristone/misoprostol Multiple pulmonary embolism, community acquired pneumonia and symptomatic anaemia: case report

In a retrospective cohort study of 156 women, conducted between 1 January 2009 and 31 August 2017 at a hospital in USA, a 20-year-old woman was described, who developed community acquired pneumonia, multiple pulmonary embolism and symptomatic anaemia after treatment with mifepristone and misoprostol for abortion. The woman underwent 44 hours labor induction abortion using oral mifepristone 200mg prior to admission and vaginal misoprostol 800 µg at admission followed by additional 400 µg every 3 hours until delivery (maximum of 5 doses). After abortion, she was immobilised from an epidural, which was placed for controlling pain shortly after admission. However, 4 days after discharge, she was readmitted with fever and shortness of breath. She was then diagnosed with multiple pulmonary embolism, symptomatic anaemia and community acquired pneumonia [time to reactions onsets and outcomes not stated]. The woman was treated with unspecified antibiotics, anticoagulation and received a blood transfusion. Subsequently, she was discharged on third day of hospitalisation. Jacques L, et al.
