T h e m e t h o d s by w h i c h t h e s e p a r t s are f o r m e d can r a n g e from relatively uncomplic a t e d stretching and b e n d i n g operations to more complex spinning and d r a w i n g operations. In each forming o p e r a t i o n , t h e s t e e l r e a c t s to t h e i m p o s e d f o r m i n g s t r a i n s by d e v e l o p i n g p r o g r e s s i v e l y g r e a t e r i n t e r n a l s t r e s s e s reflecting t h e i n c r e a s e d difficulty of d i s l o c a t i o n m o t i o n . T h i s s t r e s s r e a c t i o n to i m p o s e d s t r a i n c h a r a c t e r i z e s t h e p l a s t i c b e h a v i o r of t h e s t e e l a n d i s d e s c r i b e d q u a n t i t a t i v e l y , f o r a g i v e n m o d e of s t r a i n , by the f l o w c u r v e . T h u s , t h e f l o w c u r v e i s b o t h a k e y t o u n d e r s t a n d i n g t h e f o r m i n g c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s of t h e s t e e l a n d a t o o l w i t h w h i c h to e x p l o r e p r a c t i c a l e f f e c t s of dislocation motion. Howe v e r , L o w a n d G a r o f a l o 4 f o u n d that t h i s r e l a t i o n w a s a n i n a d e q u a t e d e s c r i p t i o n of t h e p l a s t i c - f l o w b e h a v i o r e x h i b i t e d by a n " 1 8 - 8 " s t a i n l e s s s t e e l . A c c o r d i n g l y , a r e s e a r c h p r o g r a m w a s initiated to develop a m o d e l of t h e f l o w c u r v e e x h i b i t e d by a n n e a l e d s t a b l e a u s t e n itic stainless s t e e l s and other fcc structures.
