Preface
With almost 200 years of development, pharmacognosy exists as an applied science with comparably impeccable theory and technology. As times advance, it faces various problems that cannot be solved by current technology and methodology, for example, the exact identification of the “species” level of medicinal plants, sustainable use of rare and endangered medicinal resources, and directional control of medical material quality. All of these issues greatly need to be settled by introducing new technologies and methodologies. Ever since the discovery of DNA’s double-helix structure and semi-conservative replication, molecular biology technology has permeated into almost all fields of life science, thus generating quite a number of interdisciplinary subjects. It can be clearly anticipated that molecular biology will lead the development of life science throughout the twenty-first century. Pharmacognosy will combine with molecular biology and bring about new areas of study. During this collision between pharmacognosy and molecular biology, how can we grasp and choose t
