MRS-EUROPE An Ambitious Program Of Technical Symposia, Plenary Sessions, And A Roundtable Discussion Highlight Second Annual Conference The leadership of the European wing of the Materials Research Society announces the second major conference organized by MRS-Europe. The meeting will be held June 5-8 in Strasbourg, France. The organization of the meeting is being overseen by P. Siffert, CNRS, Strasbourg. The meeting comprises three topical symposia, conducted concurrently, several plenary sessions of general interest, and a round table discussion of materials' needs in industry. The core of the meeting is three symposia: Non-Crystalline Semiconductors "Poly-, Micro-Crystalline, and Amorphous Semiconductors" is chaired by S. Kalbitzer and P. Pinard. The Scientific Committee is composed of C. Belouet, J.C. Bruyere, E.A. Davies, A. Frova, M. Morin, P. Nagels, H.J. Queisser, M. Rodot, I. Solomon, W.E. Spear, and J. Stuke. The symposium, devoted to the physics and chemistry of semiconductors in the non-crystalline state, will feature materials preparation, impurities, structure, electronic states and transitions, transports (electronic, atomic, energetic), and devices. The list of invited speakers includes W.E. Spear, S. Stuke, I.G. Austin (U.K.), C. Belouet (France), A. Bourret (France), A. Chenevas-Paule (France), F. Evangelisti (Italy), L. Ley (Germany), J. Mugarino (France), G. Revel (France), E. Sirtl (Germany), S. Veprek (Switzerland), F. Wald (U.S.A.), D.L. Weaire, and J. Werner (Germany). Amorphous Metals "Amorphous Metals and Nonequilibrium Processing" is chaired by M. von Allmen. The Scientific Committee includes K.H. Buschow, P. Desre, H.J. Guntherodt, J. Hafner, U. Koster, M.A. Nicolet, and P. Panissod. The symposium, intended to bring together scientists with expertise in techniques of metastable and amorphous metallic phase transformation, will explore such topics as mechanisms of amorphous phase formation by different methods (thermodynamics, kinetics of condensation or

solidification, radiation damage mechanisms, solid state amorphization mechanisms); characterization/modeling of different amorphization techniques (cooling rates, glass forming "power," technological aspects); relation between method of amorphization (quenching irradiation, solid-state reaction) and resulting material structure and properties, and applications aspects of the different approaches to amorphous phase formation. Invited speakers include K.H.J. Buschow (Netherlands), J. Hafner (Austria), U. Koster (Germany), H. von Lohneysen (Germany), G. Marchal (France), M.A. Nicolet (U.S.A.), P. Oelhafen (Switzerland), K. Samwer (Germany), G. Sepold (Germany), F. Spaepen (U.S.A.), and B. Stritzker (Germany). Defects In Insulators "Induced Defects in Insulators" is chaired by P. Mazzoldi. The Scientific Committee includes G.W. Arnold, J.P. Biersack, L.T. Chaderton, J.A. Davies, P. Thevenard, and P. Townsend. [Continued on Page 12]
