Multi-wavelength and Multi-level (MW/ML) Storage Systems

The chapter presents the principles of multi-wavelength and multi-level (MW/ML) optical storage system design including: mathematical model, analysis and calculation of effective factors and configuration parameters, optical channel characteristics, synthesis evaluation, crosstalk, non-destructive readout, multi-dimension encoding, error correction, multi-level CD-ROM, Blu-ray drive, mastering system for MW/ML storage. In addition, the chapter also introduces principles of the lithography and duplication process of MW/ML optical storage based on conventional CD and IC technology. Meanwhile, same important experimental apparatus and experimental results are introduced also, as nonlinear absorption superresolution storage experiment, phase shift super-resolution mask making, highspeed multi-dimension read out signal testing, large numerical aperture optical system design for multi-wavelength lasers and blue light super-resolution storage experimental system. A experiment based on near-field optical principles and correlative technology with changing the space phase and intensity distribution of the focused beam to improve the optical system transfer function to raise the resolution of the optical system, that has been used for MW/ML storage. The multi-level error code correction and multi-level run-length limited (RLL) code are great potential projects for multi-dimension, whether mathematical model method or processing circuitry have potential development. The CD-ROM of MW/ML disc copy is a new kind of mastering disc replication processes, including multi-wavelength multi-level optical disc mastering system designed, optical disc replication and testing technology, which is an important extension for MW/ML optical storage. At last in this chapter introduced two kind of practical multi-level optical disc storage systems: multi-level Blu-ray Disc drive and multi-level rewritable storage with phase change medium, experimental results and prototypes.

Configuration of MW/ML Storage Optical System Multi-function MW/ML Storage Experimental System

The section presents a typical MW/ML optical storage system which is very important experimental equipment for the MW/ML technology research and development with multi-function. It is a most representative result of OMNERC at Tsinghua University. The multi-function MW/ML optical storage experimental system is shown in Fig. 5.1a. Functions of the experimental system are shown in Table 5.1. A static read and write system is shown in Fig. 5.1b. There are two especial requires to the system: first is very high positioning accuracy of 3D and exposure energy control for multiwavelength lasers indeed. So it has a three-dimensional precision stage of positioning accuracy better than 20 nm. Second is th
