I ntroduction to Interdisciplinary Approach to Osteoporosis: Why Is It So Important? Osteoporosis is a skeletal metabolic disorder that has reached epidemic extents all over the industrialized world. Recent epidemiological studies confirm the tendency to a dramatic increase of individuals affected by osteoporosis and fragility fractures. Indeed, during the last decades, for the increase of life expectancy, this disease has become a major health threat around the world. Age, both in male and female population, increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, which affects millions of women, but lately, also men. Age-related changes in body composition, metabolic factors, and hormonal levels, accompanied by a decline in physical activity, may all provide mechanisms for the propensity to lose muscle mass, gain fat mass, and also develop bone loss.
