This book is dedicated once more to the faculty and students of the (recently renamed) Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures Program at the Graduate Center, City University of New York, who have provided such a fruitful place to teach and write over some ten years. My thanks are also due to the scholars who kindly invited me to speak in Europe and the Americas, thus providing the initial impetus to write some chapters of this book. Collaboration on the annual conferences jointly organized with Nancy Berthier, Álvaro Fernández, and Antonia del Rey Reguillo was especially important. Earlier versions of parts of Chaps. 2, 3, and 8 were first published in Film Quarterly, where I remain, as continuing columnist, deeply indebted to my editor B. Ruby Rich. The wholly new sections of star profiles included in each chapter were researched at the Centro de Documentación of Mexico City’s Cineteca, where I am most grateful as ever to its director Raúl Miranda.
