This book is dedicated to all the music teachers and music students that I have ever met. You have all made my life so much richer.

I completed my doctoral thesis some years ago. The body of this work was based on experiences I had as both a music teacher and student in Australia and South India. These encounters continue to influence my work as an academic, educator and musician and therefore provide the foundation of this book. I am forever grateful to the teachers and students that became a part of this study. I particularly note the support and encouragement throughout my journey from my arts colleagues: Associate Professor Margaret Baguley, Dr Steve Dillon, Dr Kay Hartwig, Dr Helen Payne and Professor Adrian Thomas. I also acknowledge the musical richness provided by my Indian music teachers Shrimathi, Shriram, Usha and Vijaya. I am indepted to your knowledge, skills and spirit. Thank you
