Being and becoming, for and through the other. This is how I aspire to position myself, as I relate to my clients. Positioning oneself as “being and becoming for and through the other” requires a particular set of convictions, values, attitudes and competences— the attributes of a profession that also requires deep expertise: I speak of the coaching profession. At the same time, anyone who wishes to create the conditions of unconditional acceptance, where the other is deeply and truly the center of attention, can aspire to these attributes in the context of a helping relationship. When I say “for and through the other”, I also speak of the irreducible complexity of the helping relationship and its dynamics. “I is another”,1 wrote the French poet Arthur Rimbaud. It is also the title of one of Father Maurice Zundel’s most beautiful books on spirituality (one can guess who the “Other” is for Zundel). My identity develops and is continually transformed through my contact with the “other”—this alter ego, similar to me but never the same.
